What is Judo?

More Than a Martial Art

Judo, meaning “the gentle way,” was founded by Professor Jigoro Kano in 1882 in Japan. It is based on the principle of maximum efficiency with minimum effort and mutual welfare and benefit.

Unlike striking arts, Judo focuses on throws, pins, joint locks, and chokes. It teaches practitioners how to use an opponent’s strength and momentum against them.

Today, Judo is an Olympic sport practiced by millions of people worldwide and is known for developing discipline, respect, and physical excellence.
